Cool Buy: Black & White Zig ZagTable Runner @ Multi Chic

Back in early days of Nate Berkus' HSN collection he had an amazing rug. (there's one on his set now) It looked like this:

I've been on the hunt for the rug but cannot find it anywhere. Sure, sure, I can find rugs that look like this. I just haven't really tried all that hard. But I will. Because I love a zig zag. And speaking of good zig zags, check out this black and white zig zag table runner from MultiChic.com:

14" X 72", $36. Kind of adorable right? Pair it with crisp white dinner plates, and bright colored napkins and/or flowers and you've got yourself a modern and funky table top.

P.S. I did my homework. Leave it to Copy Cat Chic to find a similar zig zag rug for less! Check it out here!

Cool Buy: Rhinestone Deer Skull @ MayaJadeCreations - Etsy

I'm obsessed with this:

I can't even describe it so I'll let its creator do it for me:

"This deer skull has been painted with silver leaf paint then embellished with thousands of brilliant crystal rhinestones that have been hand applied one-by-one. They have been contoured to the actual bones to highlight the natural definition of the skull. The antlers have been stained with a beautiful deep rich chocolate colored stain. It would be perfect display and conversation piece in any style home."

Uh huh. What she said.

Here's how I describe it: awesome.

$350 on Etsy.

Before & After: Master Bedroom

I was hesitant to post these photos because the "after" isn't quite "after enough" just yet. I still have a long way to go in my master bedroom but I thought I'd show where we're at.

First, the before picture:

Not much to look at, right? Right.

You saw the photos of my Nate Berkus headboard and Indian bedding:

But the colors in the bedding (as much as I loved it) weren't doing much for me alongside the charcoal gray of the headboard. Plus, it's almost winter. And winters here in Nebraska can be awfully long and cold and long and snow-filled and long and dreary and long. So I was on the hunt for some cheerier yet still "ethnic-looking" bedding to replace the blue. (don't worry...the blue is going in our guest room where I suspect it'll look fabulous)

Here's what I found, on sale (!!!) at Macys.com:

Oh happy day! I really like it. It makes me happy and instantly makes the room a whole lot cheerier. (the light gray walls and gray headboard and blue sheets were sort of bringing me down) Next up, I need a rug and a new dresser and a new mirror and new sidetables and potentially some new art. But that's it.

This may take awhile as I'm trying to work on a tight budget.Stay tuned, dear readers for more soon!

Cool Casa: Various Items for Cozy Time

Hi, readers -
Sorry I haven't posted in a few days. I've been a bit under the weather and awfully busy with an equally sick baby, an out of town husband. a (lovely) house guest, and way too much work.  All I want to do is snuggle up on the couch and watch trashy TV marathons. (where is America's Next Top Model when you need it?) To make up for my lack of posts all week I decided to post several items I've been eyeballing as of late.

First, this Vintage Pieced Blanket from Jayson Home:

A little spendy at $250 but it looks so comfy...like it'd go perfectly with a heavy dose of NyQuil and the annual James Bond movie marathon on TNT.

Next up, these sweet Owl Bowls from Uncommon Goods:

Perfect for holding some chicken soup at $30 for a set of three. Does anyone else think it's weird that they come in a set of three? I'd really rather have four. But they are adorable, and I do love owls. And soup. Mostly soup.

Moving on. Once I've crawled my achy body into bed, it'd be nice to have a reason to smile, and these Mustache Pillow Cases from Urban Outfitters would do the trick:

$34 for the set.

And finally, my absolute favorite:

$11.69 at Drugstore.com. Night night!

Cool Buy: Bluish-Gray Wool Rug @ Overstock.com

I'm on the hunt for a new rug for my master bedroom. Rugs are one of my least favorite things to shop for. I am often overwhelmed by the piles of them at the store, and I often suffer sticker shock when I see the prices for a good one. And believe me, you want a good one.

Cheap rugs can provide a quick fix, but they can often shed like a Pomeranian, attract lint like nobody's business and even "leak" dye. That's not to say that a pricey rug won't shed or attract fuzzies, but your odds of clean living are definitely higher.

Overstock.com has some great options, including this 8X10 beauty I found on the site for just $371.95:

My tip for shopping on Overstock is to always spend the time to read this reviews. This particular rug had 36 reviews when I last checked, including this helpful one: "I also only noticed a small amount of shedding, nothing a good vacuum a week couldn't handle. The color is more blue, but I do see hints of slate gray under certain lighting..."

Good to know. Good to know.

Cool Buy: Knitted Pool Pouf @ CB2

Oh how I love a good pouf. And this here is a good one:

"Pool" of course refers to the color and not its intended use. (read: this is NOT a flotation device!) Also available in gray, blood orange, and camo green. this little guy is just $89.95 at CB2.com and is sure to add a ton of personality to your room.

A little tip: for instant visual interest, opt for a pouf or ottoman that doesn't exactly match your chair. It'll make your room look more pieced together and acquired over time instead of a set you picked off the showroom floor.

Cool Buy: Westmore Lighting 3-Bulb Chandelier @ Lowes

Yes. I did say Lowes. As in, the home improvement store.

Listen, I'm a huge fan of unique finds and splurge purchases, but let's get real. Not everyone has $2300 to spend on a feathered chandelier. (sigh...life can be so unfair) For those of us who live in the real world where mortgages need to get paid and the fridge needs to be filled, check out this super cool option from Lowes:

This is a good looking lighting solution for $432.

If you're looking for lighting, don't forget to check Lowes. They have some great stuff that can easily blend in with your super chic decor making it look like you spent a million bucks. Here are a few of my other favorites (click on the images to see more info):

Missoni For Target

Oh Missoni...you sucked me in with your siren song. I was sort of disappointed when I arrived at Target at 8:30am only to find empty shelves everywhere. Our Targets had been picked clean. But because you can't keep a good woman down, I did manage to pick up a few things, including:

And now I need to go sell blood and plasma to pay for it all. Night night!

Cool Buy: Sari Throw @ Anthropolgie

I'm a sucker for a throw. First, I love the way they look tossed casually over a sofa or chair arm. Second, I love to snuggle up on the couch with one draped over me. This one doesn't look particularly warm but it does look awfully pretty:

It's $198 because it's hard made from recycled saris. Each one is unique. It almost makes me want to frame it and hang it on the wall. Not only is it beautiful, it's also good for keeping your rocks warm:

Poor rocks, living outside all winter long. No one to bring them hot tea or hot toddies. No pom-pom topped hats with matching scarves. The LEAST you could do is buy them a $200 throw to keep away the chill! Maybe they'll even let you borrow it?

Cool Buy: Phoenix Work Table @ Crate & Barrel

I'm torn.

On the one hand, this Phoenix Work Table from Crate & Barrel is beautiful in its simplicity. And I love how it looks like something you dug up in grandpappy's barn. (Not MY grandpappy's barn, mind you. His barn would probably contain lots of empty wine bottles and a taxidermy donkey. He's eccentric.)

On the other hand:

All those nooks and crannies make for an awful writing surface. And forget arts & crafts that involve glitter. (may I never utter those words again, God help me.) And you probably shouldn't eat on it lest you fill it with crumbs and attract bugs.

But it sure is pretty! Practical? I'll let that to you to decide.

Cool Buy: Vintage Birdcage Chandelier @ Restoration Hardware

Have you perused the 600-something-page 2011 Fall Source Book from Restoration Hardware? I did today, thanks to my dear pal The Retail Bitch who graciously passed on her copy. (why I didn't get a copy, I don't know, but RH will be hearing from me....)

There are many lovely things in the catalog - many beautiful pieces I wouldn't mind owning. But after flipping through page after page of lovely neutrals, I couldn't help but think, "would a little color kill you?" I mean SERIOUSLY. A houseplant? A painting with a color other than burnt sienna featured prominently? (btw, I know about burnt sienna because of Bob Ross...how I miss his happy little trees.)

I guess neutral is the new black. Or something.

One beautiful "want" from the book - this vintage birdcage chandelier:

So pretty and interesting. The extra small one is $2,195. The extra large is $2,995. Ouch.

But look! According to this photo spread in the latest USWeekly, actress Lauren Sanchez (who I totally had to look up on IMDB) has one in her a-friggin-mazing closet:

Clearly that 2010 cameo on NCIS really paid off! You go girl!

Cool Buy: Rose Pink Duvet Cover @ Saffron & Marigold

I am obsessed with Indian textiles. I'm fortunate that my husband travels there a few times a year and can be counted on to bring back some beautiful material for bedspreads and table cloths, two of my favorite things.

Oh how I wish I could join him one of these days. I dream about finding myself in a beautiful linen shop with bolts of inexpensive yet fabulous fabric stacked as high as the eye can see. I'd have my own little American Beauty moment, only with napkins instead of rose petals. (and I probably wouldn't be naked....I am fairly certain they frown upon public nudity in India). As you can see, I've given this a lot of thought.

But look! You don't even have to spend the money on airfare! Check out this gorgeous duvet cover from Saffron & Marigold:

Only $179 for the King. Sweet dreams!

Cool Buy: Open Wood Stool @ Room & Board

Oooh. Pretty.

But where would I put it?

Oooooooh! I love it. It's so smooth and wavy and natural. I probably couldn't rest my glass of wine on it (or could I) but a bowl of popcorn could work, yes?
$349 at Room & Board.

New Additions to Cool Casa @ Etsy

Vintage Blue Tin Tobacco Box

Vintage Metal Storage Cabinet

Cool Buy: Emma Feather Pendant @ Jayson Home

Talk about absolutely impractical, overpriced, and totally unecessary. And fabulous. So friggin' awesomely fabulous it hurts my eyes.

It's a lamp. Made out of feathers. And it's $2,295.

I love it. I would seriously consider selling a kidney or some other secondary organ (anyone need an appendix? Does a spleen really DO anything?) for one of these.  I may have to try to replicate it on the cheap. Stay tuned, readers. This DIYer is feeling crafy.

Before & After: Bathtub Refinishing

In my fantasy world I have an unlimited home improvement budget. (I also have a superhuman metabolism and I can fly, but that's neither here nor there) In my REAL world I do not have any of those things. What I do have is the number for AAA Electrostatic Paint Company in Omaha, NE.

Friends, if you have an old, tired bathroom like mine but the idea of spending $2,000 on a new tub is just as realistic as the idea of being cast as the next Real Housewife of [INSERT CITY HERE], then look into electrostatic paint.

Here are some before pictures of my tub:

Festive, no?

Here it is now:

The entire process took about four hours and cost about $265.

Is the bathroom perfect now? No. Is it better and brighter and less Brady Bunchesque? Yes.

I could've also had them do the wall tile but I sort of dig the gray. Can't wait to accessorize!
