They say "tacky"....I say "spirited."

And to all a good night!

Cool Gift: New Years Eve Readiness Kit @ Any Grocery Store

Okay, it's Christmas Eve. This is like that moment in the SATs where the proctor tells everyone to put their pencils down. No more filling in those little bubbles. The party is over. Or actually it's just beginning. So here's a quicky gift idea you can get at any grocery store (and most drug stores and Targets). Make a New Year's Eve kit. In a cute gift bag, basket or ice bucket add:

1. Bottle of bubbly

2. Bottle of Advil

3. Bottle of Gatorade

4. Box of Saltines

Attach a tag that says, "Here's to a happy and hangover-free holiday!" Not only will it be a thoughtful gift, but they'll think of you as a life-saver on New Year's Day. Hooray for you!

Cool Gift: Relaxation @ Massage Envy

I am exhausted. Shopping, wrapping, shipping, planning parties, attending parties, packing, unpacking, cooking, yo-yo dieting, opening wine bottles....the holidays can be a stressful time. That's why this makes an excellent gift. I should know, I got one this year from my awesome hubby who knows that a happy wife = a happy life.

These guys have locations all over the country but obviously check their web site so make sure there's one in your recipient's home town.

From $75-$150 or a custom amount. You can either pick up a gift card at any Massage Envy location or you can buy it online and have it emailed to someone immediately! And for those of you concerned about the impersonal nature of an emailed gift card, I have this to say: WE ARE TWO DAYS FROM CHRISTMAS AND YOU ARE JUST NOW GETTING AROUND TO SHOPPING FOR THIS PERSON. CHANCES ARE THEY WILL NOT CARE THAT YOU EMAILED THEM A GIFT CARD ONCE THEY ARE FACE DOWN IN A DIMLY LIT ROOM WITH SOME STRONG-HANDED STRANGER GIVING THEM A SWEDISH. SO LET IT GO. IT'S BETTER THAN A FRUITCAKE.

Happy holidays!

Cool Gift: The Find @ BN.com

Have I mentioned how much I love flea markets and antique malls? Back in October I went to the Charlotte Flea Market and just last month I found the GLORIOUS River Market Antique Mall in Kansas City, MO.

Nothing makes me happier than to walk through piles of stuff like this:

Charlotte, NC

Kansas City, MO
(SIDE NOTE: OMG. Can SOMEONE tell me why all my vertical pictures come up like this? It is driving me to drink! HELP!)

My sister-in-law is an amazing bargain shopper too and has a knack for displaying her finds in a way that looks both interesting and cozy all at once. That's an amazing talent, isn't it? Wouldn't you love to perfect that skill, too? ME TOO! Let's get this book, shall we?

$19.64 at BN.com....you can also order it online and pick it up at a Barnes & Nobel near you. There's plenty of time to get this into an appreciative giftee's hands before Christmas. Don't dilly-dally!

Cool Gift: 365 Calendar @ CB2

Trust me. Your giftee does NOT want a calendar featuring pictures of cute animals dressed like celebrities. (actually, maybe I do) But maybe they want this one from the CB2 Mod Market instead:

$19.95.

Cool Gift: Andy Warhol Coloring Book @ Amazon

Last week my sister and I were coloring with our daughters and discussing how therapeutic some Crayons and a coloring book can be. You don't have to have any artistic skills whatsoever - someone has already drawn the pictures for you - all you have to do is color inside the lines. Or not. Whatever floats your boat. It makes me think that this would make a great gift for a grown up AND an artsy hipster kid:
Andy Warhol and his business partner created this book as a holiday gift for clients in 1961. It has since been reprinted for your enjoyment!
Cheaper than an hour of therapy at $13.46.

Cool Gift: Stoppy @ Amazon.com

I've seen this little guy in House Beautiful and on Apartment Therapy and it makes me wish I had a door that needs stopping. Meet Stoppy:

Is he cute or what? According to the maker's web site, Stoppy comes in ALL SORTS of colors, but I can only find a few on Amazon.com. (Home Depot and Target only carry the black, and OranizeIt.com has it in black and white)

A great stocking stuffer at $7.99.

Cool Gift: Industrial Desk Accessories @ Restoration Hardware

Unless your giftee is a huge fan of the movie Office Space and has an emotional attachment to his Swingline stapler, you may want to consider these ultra cool industrial desk accessories for your work-from-home pals:

They make great stocking stuffers and range from $15 (for the super clips) to $69 (for the heavy weight tape dispenser). Might even make work more fun? Nah....

Cool Gift: Marks The Plot Coasters @ ModCloth

If you haven't read all the books represented in this super cool coaster set, I recommend purchasing lots of CliffsNotes. That way you'll sound uber-smart when serving cocktails:

And if you're like me, every advantage helps.

$24.99 at ModCloth.com.

Cool Gift: Wooden Four in a Row @ CB2

Connect Four is one of my favorite games but I've got too much brightly colored plastic stuff in my house right now to warrant the purchase of the game.

Problem solved:

Awesome, right? A gift adults and kids will love.  $49.95 at CB2. (and free shipping!)

Cool Gift: Red Travel Clock @ Pottery Barn

My husband has a GIANT, CLUNKY, DUSTY alarm clock/CD player/radio on his nightstand. Oh how I hate that thing. He doesn't even use the alarm function - he sets his Blackberry alarm instead. And we don't use the CD player or radio.

Guess what might make its way into hubby's Christmas stocking this year:

Beautiful, classic, SMALL. Sure, it won't wake you up by blasting "Whoomp! There it is!" but I think we (I) can live with that.

$34 at Pottery Barn.

Cool Gift: French Striped Blanket @ Alder & Co.

Mmmmmm cozy.

These blankets are made out of a soft wool blend and are big enough to wrap yourself up in. (80" X 60" in case you were wondering) I love the rugby feel of them...slightly masculine and yet classic enough to go with just about any style.

Warms my heart just thinking about it!

$175 at AlderAndCoShop.com.

Cool Gift: Fleur-de-Lis Pitcher & Glasses @ Apartment48

I had a hard time choosing just one thing from Apartment48 to include in my holiday gift guide. In the end, I found myself drawn to the incredible green color of this pitcher. It made me think of summertime cocktails and pitchers of iced tea. (it's 36 degrees as I type this....you can see why I'm drawn to anything that reminds me of warm lazy days?)

$48 for the pitcher, $14 per glass at Apartment48.com.

And because I spent an hour looking around the web site, here are a few of my other favorite items worth checking out!

Marie Antoinette Bookends, $90
Bowling Monkeys, $18
Ceramic Cake Stand, $88

Cool Gift: His & Hers Glasses @ Kate Spade

Know a couple who loves to share an evening cocktail? (Well hellooooo, new BFFs!) Pair these guys with a bottle of their favorite poison (perhaps a nice Scotch to keep the chill out?) and you've got a fab gift for the holiday or for a housewarming:

$50 for the set at KateSpade.com. (and free shipping! yippee!)

And because we're an equal opportunity blog here at Cool Casa, check out these other combinations you can order these glasses in:

You go, Kate Spade.

Cool Gift: Roost Agate Bookends @ Velocity Art & Design

It's hard not to love an agate. There's something magical about an ugly rock with a beautiful inside. (INSERT SOME WITTY METAPHOR ABOUT NOT JUDGING BOOKS BY THEIR COVER HERE)

Here's a gift that will never - I repeat: NEVER - go out of style. Why, you ask? Because nature is always chic. (unless we're talking about Pet Rocks...in which case, allow me to speak for most people when I say, "huh?")

Back to rocks that make sense:

The Roost Agate Bookends are $153 for the pair.

Cool Gift: Leaf Teacup & Saucer @ Pier1

Though they're called teacups, I think these little guys are more like demitasse cups, perfect for an espresso lover. But aren't they pretty?

$22.95 for the set of four.

Add a little extra oomph with my favorite Cuban coffee (read: liquid crack), Cafe Bustelo which you can now apparently buy on Amazon.

$6.99 for a 10oz. can.

Cool Gift: Time @ MerryMaids

OMG YES. YES, PLEASE.

Do you have a tired mommy on your holiday shopping list? A bachelor who doesn't own a vacuum? A hostess with the mostess and a house full of guests?

Get ready to be a hero:

The MerryMaids gift card can be loaded with $150 - $10,000. If you call them at 1-866-212-5846 they can give you a personalized estimate of how much your recipient would need. (obviously a large home would be more expensive to clean than a one-bedroom apartment)

Aaaaaaah....I just love the small of a clean house!

Cool Gift: Design Sponge at Home @ BN.com

BUY BOOKS, PEOPLE. Real ones. Not those things you download to your iPad. Real books made of real paper. Not only are they great to read, they are also beautiful, warm up a space, and make a great gift.

One of my all-time favorite blogs has released a fabulous new coffee table book full of amazing images and ideas for your home. (including 50 before and after pictures submitted by readers!)

$26.06 at BN.com. (and the Barnes & Noble version has additional content. More photos!)

***Husband, if you're reading this, this would make a lovely gift for a certain design-loving individual you know.

He's totally not reading. But he will be!

Cool Gift: Bolinas Flatware @ Jayson Home

I love cheese. In fact, I'm going to make today's post a two-for-one gift idea.

First up, the Bolinas cheese serving utensils at Jayson Home:

Dark wood handles with mother of pearl inlay.. $26 each for the cheese knife, spreader and plane. (if you're only going to buy two, I recommend the knife and spreader)

Now the second part of this gift idea. My ALL TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT in Manhattan is Artisanal. If you're a cheese lover like I am, this is a must-stop on any trip to the big city. Along with a fabulous sommelier, Artisanal features a fromagier...a cheese expert who curates the restaurant's cheese cellar (not an actual cellar....like several giant wine refrigerators in their own special room) where they keep hundreds of artisanal cheeses.

AND THEY DELIVER!

Their small tin features one of my favorite cheeses of all time - Purple Haze from Vermont - along with two other lovely selections, crackers and fig jam.

$55 at ArtisanalBistro.com.

This makes a great gift for your holiday hosts...and maybe they'll even share! Mmmmm....

Cool Gift: Trunki Trixie @ MelissaAndDoug.com

Need a gift for the little jet-setter in your life? How cute is this guy?

Available in a zillion color combinations the Trunki is part suitcase, part pull toy and ride-on. Kids can pull it through the airport using the leash, or, when their little legs get tired of hoofing it through the terminal mom or dad (or auntie or nanny) can take them for a ride. (and yes, it's carry-on size)

$39.99.

Cool Gift: 5-Piece Stainless Champagne Set @ CB2

This is a whole lot of gift for $50.

A gorgeous stainless steel ice bucket plus four hand-blown stemless champagne flutes. If you REALLY want to impress and have a little money to burn, add a bottle of your favorite sparkly. (doesn't have to be a big splurge....Trader Joe's has an AMAZING $10 prosecco)

$49.95 at CB2.com.

Cool Gift: Wish Tree Jewelry Holder @ Anthropologie

If you've got it, flaunt it. And I'm talking about your jewelry. Spandex is a privilege, ladies. (but Lycra is our friend!)

Wouldn't this make a lovely gift for the fashionista in your life?

$78 at Anthropologie.com

Cool Gift: Birch Pillar Candles @ World Market

What to get for your aunt who always sets the most gorgeous holiday table?

These are made of ivory paraffin and wrapped in actual birch. No, they're not a fire hazard. (that's what my husband would say) The wick burns straight down and will last for hours. Buy three different sizes for the perfect addition to any wintertime fete!

On sale now at WorldMarket.com, $5.59 - $19.99.

Cool Gift: Leafy Keen Salad Set @ Land of Nod

As the mother of a toddler I often find myself wondering, "what do I have to do to get some friggin' peace and quiet around here?!" It seems that 90% of the toys we own make noise - they sing, they talk, they spaz out when tickled. So I, for one, would be thrilled to find this little gem under the tree on Christmas day:

And I think my daughter would agree as she loves "pretend versions" of anything grown up.

I wonder how long it'd take her to start using the tossers as drumsticks?

$24.95.

Monday, November 21, 2011

Cool Gift: Paper Pack Delux @ Three Potato Four

I warned you that I am obsessed with this shop so it should come as no surprise that my first holiday gift idea comes from Three Potato Four.

When I saw this I immediately thought of several ephemera-loving gal pals who would probably love it. The Paper Pack Delux is hand curated by the folks at Three Potato Four to include vintage paper finds, like maps, stamps, tickets, etc.

This would make a great gift for a scrapbooker or for that friend who always gives you a hand-made birthday card leaving you feeling totally lame for the birthday text message you sent her that year.

Yeah, you know who I'm talking about.

$25.

Friday, November 18, 2011

Cool Buy: Industrial Cafeteria Table @ Three Potato Four

Three Potato Four will be my undoing. Mark my words.

Why, you ask? Because they have stuff like this:

It's also available in an 8-seater and 12-seater. But the 4-seater is just enough for a kitchen or play room. Wouldn't this make an awesome art table for a kids room?

Sure it's $2,000 so you probably don't want little Johnny breaking out the glitter paint on it. Buy maybe if he promised to be EXTRA careful?

Thursday, November 17, 2011

Cool Buy: Midcentury Nightstands @ TINI

Let's start with this. TINI stands for "This Is Not Ikea." It is a fabulous shop in Los Angeles. They ship.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, I sort of love these nightstands:

Honestly, I'd probably lacquer them in a super glossy white. I can't see this color of wood without wanting to paint over it. Forgive me. But the overall shape and detail on the door are amazing. And functional!

$245 each.

If you don't love them, don't you fret. There are plenty of other pretty things to look at on their site. And I repeat: they ship.
